Innovative & Sustainable Solutions

Transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. Increasing the number of zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs) we have on the road will help in meeting the country’s emissions targets, including a net-zero emissions goal for 2050. Global warming and air pollution are increasingly growing concerns for people everywhere, and the government is mandating that Canadians adopt electric vehicle technology sooner rather than later.

As a business owner, you want to be ahead of the curve. By 2030, the government is aiming for 60% of all passenger vehicles sold to be electric. You’ll want to get in while the rebates and incentives remain available.

Q: What is the Incentives for Zero-Emissions Vehicles (iZEV) Program in Canada?

The Canadian government offers various financial incentives for consumers purchasing or leasing eligible Zero-Emission Vehicles. The iZEV program started in 2019 and is slated to run until March 31, 2025. The type of vehicle you purchase, and the province or territory where you are located, will determine the amount you qualify for.

Each province has its own set of criteria concerning rebates that apply to electric vehicles and chargers. In some cases, you may receive tax exemptions on certain items or a financial reward for scrapping your old gas-powered vehicle.

Q: What types of electric vehicles are available?

When considering the purchase of an EV, you have no shortage of vehicle choices.

Some models operate using electricity only with no gas engine parts; these are Battery-Powered Vehicles (BEVs).

Plug-In Hybrids (PHEVs) receive their power from electric vehicle supply equipment (charging stations). They rely on stored electricity to operate but retain the option of using gas should the electrical charge run out.

Hybrids (HEV) are powered by an internal combustion engine and at least one electric motor. Energy is stored for electric propulsion as the gas-powered engine operates. Most run on gas, electricity, or a combination of the two, but they do not get plugged in. Mild hybrid vehicles (MHEV) are similar in design but cannot operate on electric power alone.

Provincial and federal rebates are most commonly available on BEVs, PHEVs and FCEVs.

Q: What are FCEVs?

Fuel cell electric vehicles are not as common in Canada. These models combine compressed hydrogen gas and oxygen to power the vehicle. This electrochemical process allows chemical energy to be transformed into electricity. With a 300-mile range, FCEVs boast greater efficiency than combustion engines and produce zero tailpipe emissions. Fast fueling times make this an attractive option; however, the technology remains cost prohibitive.

Q: Are there incentives for larger transport vehicles?

Yes. The Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles Program (iMHZEV) is similar to the iZEV program listed above. From walk-in vans and coach buses to dump trucks, there are opportunities for buyers and dealerships to benefit from government assistance.

Q: Is there a government program in place for charging infrastructure?

Yes. The Canadian government is investing heavily in supporting the growth of recharging and hydrogen refuelling stations across the country. The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) provides generous funding opportunities for businesses, indigenous communities. and others.
